Simbulance: A Case Study in High-Fidelity Paramedic Training Environments

Birmingham City University's paramedic students train inside small, confined spaces long before they work inside real ones. Ambulances are cramped, in motion, and unforgiving of hesitation. Static classroom scenarios cannot teach a student what it feels like to treat a patient in that environment, under those constraints, without a lecturer standing over their shoulder.

RIB designed and built the simbulance now in use at BCU's Professor Carol Doyle Simulation Centre, funded by Health Education England in partnership with West Midlands Ambulance Service. The build gives paramedic tutors a full-scale, camera- and microphone-equipped ambulance environment, integrated into a wider patient journey that moves learners from scene to resuscitation room to ward.

Sharon Hardwick, Associate Professor of Paramedic Science, added that working in the space without direct supervision builds the leadership and self-reliance students need before treating a real patient.
